South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has begun a three-day state visit to China starting Jan. 9. This is his sixth visit since 2008 when he took office as president.

China and South Korea are close neighbors. They established diplomatic ties in August 1992, and their friendly relations have since developed rapidly. Over the past 20 years, the bilateral trade volume has increased 34 times from nearly 6.4 billion U.S. dollars in 1992 to 220 billion U.S. dollars in 2011.

China has become South Korea's largest trading partner and major investment destination. Furthermore, the two countries have been deepening cooperation in finance, logistics, high technology, and other areas.

As for politics, both sides view their bilateral relations from a strategic perspective, and have made great efforts to enhance political mutual trust. Military ties between the two countries have also enjoyed rapid development in recent years.

China-South Korea relations have been constantly upgraded over the past 20 years. Their relations were initially defined as "friendly cooperative relations," and were upgraded to "cooperative partnership" in 1998 and then to "comprehensive cooperative partnership" in 2003.

During Lee's first visit to China in 2008, the bilateral relations were upgraded to "strategic cooperative partnership." Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said during his recent visit to South Korea that the two countries are both friendly neighbors and close partners.

However, some urgent issues have already appeared due to the in-depth development of the bilateral relations, especially the change of the powers caused by China's rapid development.
