Use of force in Iran, Syria not so simple

Beijing, Nov.18--Following the killing of Muammar Qaddafi, Western powers appear to be moving to tighten the rope around Syria and Iran. Signs have evidently point to an impending attack against Syria and Iran.

Sun Lixin, an expert on the Middle East and vice director of the Research Center for Developing Countries under the China Institute of International Studies, said in an interview with People's Daily that the use of force is not such a simple proposition as easy as it seems.

Difficult to copy 'Libya pattern'

Reporter: Western countries are applying more and more pressure on Syria, and some have even forecasted that Syria would become the "Second Libya." What is your view?

Sun: It is difficult for the West to copy the "Libya pattern" when it comes to Syria.

Reporter: Why is it difficult?

Sun: For instance, prior to the use of force against Libya, the United States and other Western countries prompted the United Nations to pass U.N. Security Council resolutions 1970 and 1973, which directly caused NATO to use force against Libya.

When the West attempted to use force against Libya through the United Nations, China and Russia voted against the proposal, which has at least made a repeat of the “Libya pattern” through normal procedures impossible.

The U.N. resolutions on Libya made it easy for the finky social democrats[NDP]& Liberals in Canada to support NATO"s war in Libya. I think the NDP will be reluctant to vote in favour of a war in Syria or Iran unless there is a UN resolution - & quite possibly other social democratic governments/opposition will also be reluctant to support a war without UN authorization. Conservatives Harper, Baird, McKay are hawks but it will make it more risky for them politically to launch a NATO war without a UN resolution, especially as there is talk the opposition is armed. However the Conservatives with 38.6% of the votes cast don"t need opposition approval. The following is an excerpt of an article
The spring is set as a deadline due to the exit of American forces from the region, Yedioth Ahronoth daily writes. In the absence of US forces, Israel can attack without American consent. The newspaper also quotes the Daily Beast website as claiming that Israel now has tens of billions of dollars worth of high-tech arms capable of “blinding and stunning” Iran at their disposal. So should a military action commence, Israel will not be content with just air raids and bombardment, but also will derail the internet and all kinds of digital and mobile communication in the country.

US and the west have been encourage by what happened in Libya. Resolutions 1970 and 1973 did not authorize the bombing expeditions, yet US and the west did it. Just by veto would not do the job for Russia and China. Unless Russia and China can put force behind their words, US and the west can topple Syria and Iran with UN closing its eyes.

The deliberate and unprovoked US co=ordinated attacks on Iran will ironically cause Iran to realise the Saddam Hussein"s "Mother of all wars in the Middle East".Nukes will fly and US troops will die by the thousands, not to mention the destruction of US axis-of-tyranny in the ME.Bring it on then ......
