Stand firm on peaceful coexistence of major powers

Two pieces of news about relations between China and India have become the focus of public attention lately.

First, a delegation of 500 young Indians paid a friendly visit to China on Sept. 20. This is a great event in the history of China-Indian youth exchanges and has raised the hopes of people in both countries for bilateral friendly cooperative relations in the future.

Secondly, Indian media deliberately cooked up a story with two irrelevant things. Indian media reported recently that China announced an expansion of its mineral exploration in the Indian Ocean seabed after it expressed objection to the joint oil and gas exploration between India and Vietnam in the South China Sea.

The fact is that as early as two months ago, China had obtained the exploration rights of multi-metal sulfide resources in the exploration and mining area within the international seabed area of the southwestern Indian Ocean under the approval of the Assembly of the International Seabed Authority. China also enjoys the priority mining rights of the same resources in that area, which covers 10,000 square kilometers.

The two pieces of news reflect the complicated reality as China and India, two Asian powers, are rising together.

China and India are close neighbors, and to strengthen their close relations and promote friendly cooperation is in the common interests of people in both countries. From ancient to modern times, numerous friendly exchanges have taken place between China and India and are widely remembered.

As the two countries are developing rapidly and have made considerable achievements, why are they repeatedly have problems understanding each other? Maybe the reason is that time is needed because they both bear historical burdens that are hard to unload, or that they are concerned that the road for them to walk side by side is not wide enough.

It is not hard to imagine that if the two big Asian counties check each other with a uneasy and suspicious sight, frictions and contradictions will inevitably grow and regional tension will be caused; on the other hand, if the two check each other with a big heart, perfectly control the pace of the dragon-elephant dance and build up a harmonious atmosphere for the bilateral relations, the China-India relations will definitely have a brilliant future.

Of course, since the two countries have different histories, cultural backgrounds and social systems, it is inevitable that some contradictions and different views exist between them. However, the 2,000-year history of China-India exchanges has proven that the two countries both can absorb wisdom and courage from their own fertile cultural soils and no contradiction can damage the foundation for the two countries to develop their neighborly relations.

Realities tell us that economic globalization will further interweave the interests of different countries, keep enlarging the space of common development and turn peace, development and cooperation into common demands. Economic globalization has created a free stage for the rise of big emerging countries and created opportunities for every country to open up and absorb new nutrition.

It is a wise choice for both sides that China and India regard each other as partners of strategic cooperation. We should believe that as long as the two countries assess the situation correctly, expand and deepen the points of common interests in a timely fashion and promote the strategic and practical cooperation actively, they will be able to seize the opportunity to accelerate their developments and cope with the challenges, share the fruits of development and jointly create a glorious future.

The year 2011 is the Year of China-India Exchanges, and it shows the two sides' faith of promoting the friendship for generations that the two countries both invited 500 youth from each other for a visit. As the youth undertake the historic mission of living together in amity, cooperating hand in hand and developing jointly, we could naturally and firmly believe that the two energetic and vigorous Asian countries of China and India will definitely be able to keep making new progresses for the peaceful, harmonious and win-win bilateral relations between the two countries.
