Hamburg earns second victory of the season

BERLIN, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Struggling Bundesliga club Hamburg was able to seal their second victory at the ninth match day owing the winner by striker Ivo Illicevic against Freiburg whereas German international Lukas Podolski scored a brace to wrap the win over Hannover on Sunday.

In a rough match with many fouls, Cologne was able to seal the fourth match of the season against stunner team Hannover. Cologne striker and German international Lukas Podolski brought his side up front when he hammered a dead ball goal into bottom left with 24 minutes into the match.

After interval, Hannover took over but their goal at the 71st minute through midfielder Sergio Pinto was denied due to an alleged offside position. Hannover relentlessly pressed for the equalizer but Cologne striker Podolski destroyed all their hopes of a equalizer when he scored with a tremendous shot from penalty area for the 2-0 victory.

Cologne jumps from 12th to 10th position with 13 points while Hannover slipped from 5th to 7th with 15 points. Hamburg sealed the second win at the ninth match as midfielder Ivo Ilicevic scored the decider but Hamburg had more luck than judgement. Hamburg striker Heung Min Son shocked the host Freiburg with the opener when he exploited a follow up shot by header from very close range.

Freiburg remained unfazed and was able to level the score at the 47th minute as Freiburgs top striker Papiss Demba Cisse slotted home a cross to equalize the score.

Freiburg remained active and aggressive but their poor chance conversion was punished by effective Hamburg, through striker Ivo Ilicevic who finished a combination for the 2-1 lead at the 73rd minute.

Freiburg had the golden chance at the 81st minute to tie the score but striker Cisse pulled the penalty just wide to donate struggling Hamburg three points. Hamburg stays at the bottom of the standing owing only seven points out of nine matches whilst Freiburg slipped from 15th to 17th position with seven points but with a better goal difference.
