London Olympics render 6,800 offers for torchbearers

15:43, December 09, 2011

LONDON, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- The first 6,800 offers for torchbearers of the London Olympics torch relay were put in place on Thursday at the iconic London Tower.

Among the candidates, 5,600 were selected through public nomination campaigns by the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) as well as its partners, according to local authorities.

"Today we are one step closer to giving thousands of people their moment to shine during the Olympic torch relay next summer," said Sebastian Coe, Chairman of LOCOG.

"The sum of the individual stories of our torchbearers will show the world that the Olympic spirit is alive and well right across the UK," he said.

Among the nominees was Jonathan Edwards, the former Olympic gold medalist in men's triple jump. "It's really exciting," he said.

These nominees need to go through a background check, before they finally become torchbearers next March.

A further 1,200 offers are to be given by the end of next January to complete the 8,000-strong torchbearer team for the London Olympics.
