10:10, October 19, 2011

CANBERRA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Australian Formula One driver Mark Webber on Wednesday paid tribute to his friend Dan Wheldon, after the British lost his life in a horrific IndyCar crash in Las Vegas of U.S., Fox Sports Australia reported.

Wheldon, 33, was killed after a high-speed crash at the final race of the 2011 IndyCar season at Las Vegas. Popular Australian driver Will Power was also injured in the IndyCar season finale's fiery crash.

Webber told Fox Sports Australia that the horror crash has affected him very much.

"I knew Dan pretty well. We spent time together at Brand's Hatch working together when we were young," Webber said.

"It was good to have a good, jovial friend around. He will be sorely missed. He was a great guy, a great competitor and a star of our sport.

"It's a very diverse sport... When you lose someone, it's close to all of us.

"His death was an almighty shock. You still toss and turn at night thinking of him and his family."

Wheldon is survived by his wife Susie, and his two sons Sebastian and Oliver.
