Russian football head's decision to resign should be respected: minister

09:44, June 27, 2012

MOSCOW, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Russian Football Union (RFS) head Sergei Fursenko's decision to resign should be respected, Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said Tuesday.

"Generally, when the results of a football season or a cycle are lower than tasks, leaders of national football federations should deal with it and find out reasons for the failure," Mutko told a press conference here.

"If the official believes that he cannot do anything and wants to resign, we will respect his decision," he added.

Fursenko resigned Monday and apologized for the national squad' s failure during the Euro 2012 tournament.

Mutko revealed many candidates to succeed Fursenko were being considered. But the minister rejected reports saying he himself will become the head of the RFS.

"I am the minister of sport and aspire for no other posts," he said.

According to Mutko, it was important to define the future direction of the Russian football and find out its prospects, and "a development strategy is needed."

A 4-1 victory over the Czech Republic, a 1-1 draw with Poland and a 1-0 defeat to Greece stopped Russia en route to the quarterfinals in the Euro 2012 tournament.
