German public optimistic for London Olympics prospect

BERLIN, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Some two-thirds of German citizens put their full credit on the German Olympics delegation and their athletes, believing that the German delegation will claim at least the fifth place in the medal table at the upcoming 2012 Summer Olympics in London, which is slated from July 27 to August 12, 2012.

Wednesday will be only 100 days left in ignition of the Olympic flame in London's Olympic Stadium. In the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, Germany ranked in fifth place with 41 medals in total. About two-thirds of Germans trust the German athletes to keep this place in 2012 or even be better. Only 21 percent believe they will fare worse at the Olympic Games 2012 medal tally.

About two-thirds of Germans (64 percent) put credit on the German equestrians to win the eighth consecutive gold, silver or bronze medals in the equestrian dressage riders and dressage, and they also believe that swimming and athletics competitions will bring Olympic medals for Germany (both 62 percent).

Three quarters of the German respondents believe in a win gold medals at dressage equestrians, followed by swimming (74 percent), athletics (67 percent) and jumping (69 percent).

Furthermore, 51 percent of the German people believe the German athletes will win medals at the events of gymnastics and 50 percent believe German athletes would win medals in canoeing.
