Founder of Clipper honored as sailing image ambassador of Qingdao

QINGDAO, China, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Robin Knox-Johnston, founder of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, was honored as the sailing image ambassador of Qingdao, east China, official of local sports bureau said Wednesday.

After Clipper visited Qingdao for the first time in 2006, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston has come to Qingdao for eight times and did a lot to promote sailing in Qingdao, said Lin Zhiwei, official of local sports bureau.

This image ambassador was thanks to his efforts of promoting sailing in Qingdao, like giving advices to local government, communicating with youngsters and introducing Qingdao in international sailing events, Lin said.

Born in Britain in 1939, Robin left Falmouth of Britain in his 32-foot (9.8-meter) boat on June 14 in 1968 and managed to circumnavigate the globe non-stop and single-handed on April 22 in 1969.

In 1996, Robin established the first Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and has since worked with the Clipper Ventures company as Chairman to progress the race to higher levels every year.

Clipper has visited Qingdao four times in a row and will continue coming here in the next two races.
