MADRID, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Villarreal's Italian striker Giuseppe Rossi will miss the rest of the season with a serious knee injury, the Spanish club said Thursday.
Rossi suffered a blow on his right knee during his side's 3-0 defeat away to Real Madrid on Wednesday night and tests carried out on Thursday confirmed the extent of his injury.
He will undergo an operation on Thursday night and the expected recovery time in six months, which means he will miss almost all of the season, but should have recovered in time if he is selected to play for Italy in next summer's European Championships.
Rossi's injury is a huge blow to Villarreal, who are currently third from bottom of the BBVA Primera Liga and lost their opening three matches in the Champions League.
Coach Garrido's job is through to be in danger should his side lose next Saturday's home match against Rayo Vallecano.
Villarreal's Brazilian international striker Nilmar has been out of action for a month.
