China farm produce prices edge up

08:22, September 26, 2012

BEIJING, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's farm produce prices in 36 large and medium-sized cities edged up slightly last week, new figures from the Ministry of Commerce have indicated.

The retail price of eggs continued to climb, up 0.4 percent from a week earlier, according to a statement posted on the ministry's website.

Prices of cooking oils rose slightly, while prices of rice and flour both moved up 0.2 percent, the statement said.

Last week, the wholesale prices of 18 kinds of vegetables remained steady as a result of ample supplies. The prices of cabbage, lettuce and radish declined 8.1 percent, 6 percent and 5.9 percent, respectively, while green beans, balsam pears and tomato gained 7.9 percent, 7.8 percent and 6.7 percent, respectively.

Meat prices saw slight changes while the wholesale prices of eight kinds of sea products rose 0.1 percent week on week, the ministry added.

Food prices account for about a third of the weighting in the nation's calculation of the consumer price index (CPI), the key gauge of inflation. The CPI rose 2 percent year on year in August, accelerating from 1.8 percent in July, according to government data.
