EU anti-subsidy probe on Chinese bikes abuses policies: MOC

BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission's decision to start an anti-subsidy investigation into imported bikes from China is an apparent abuse of trade remedy measures, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Saturday.

"After maintaining anti-dumping measures on Chinese bikes for 19 years, the commission's move to launch a fresh anti-subsidy probe on the same product is a typical abuse of trade remedy policies," a MOC official said.

Accusations of the establishment of subsidy programs lack evidence, the official said, adding that China's small market share in the EU, around 2 to 3 percent, could in no way cause harm to local manufacturers.

The MOC said China will closely watch the investigation's progress and reserve its right to implement countermeasures within the WTO framework.

Europe has imposed anti-dumping tariffs on Chinese bikes since 1993 and decided last year to extend a 48.5-percent duty until 2016.

If they play this type of game, China can do the same by not buying their luxury items and things that Chinese companies can make, even if not of the same quality or package. Two can play this game!

All this dumping is turning out to be complete nuisance for me personally as, though I like to keep my Chinese friends happy, bicycles don"t fit very easily on an aeroplane and can never, ever count as hand luggage. Please, for the sake of all of us who regularly travel between the EU and China put an end to this abnormal situation as the number of "favours" I"m being asked every time I leave the country is rapidly getting out of hand! Is there any chance China could limit its dumping to easily portable items in the future - I would hate to have to RIDE all the way from Calais to Zhejiang just in order to "save face".
