Owners of some 120,000 BMWs sold in China will be asked to nail down a day for car inspection starting next month, BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd said Monday.

A total of 120,246 BMW vehicles sold in China, among which 118, 256 are locally made, are to be recalled, China's quality watchdog, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, said Monday.

"We have asked dealers to prepare auto parts and they will contact car owners next month," Yang Ming, a public relations staff with BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd, a joint venture of BMW Group and Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd, told the Global Times Monday.

Engineers will check and replace problematic battery cable cover in cars involved in the recall, which takes about half an hour to finish, Yang said, noting that the recall starts from May 10.

BMW AG, the world's largest premium car maker, announced Monday its largest recall in recent years. Over 1.3 million 5 and 6 Series BMWs made between 2003 and 2010 will be checked for repairs worldwide.

The recall was necessitated by concerns over a possible problem with battery cable cover in the trunk, which could create electrical system malfunctioning or cause fire in the wiring system in extreme cases, the company said.

Though the German giant said no report of fires has been received so far, Chinese consumers expressed displeasure Monday, with some saying they "cannot see why it took the producer eight years to find the problem" and others complaining they are "at a loss for what to buy in the future."
