In February 2012, China surpassed the United States for the first time as the world's fastest growing smart device market.

In the month, 23 percent of activations of smartphones and tablets running Apple's iOS or Google's Android mobile operating systems occurred in China, compared with 22 percent in the United States, according to mobile analytics firm Flurry.

Bloomberg News cited a report released by Flurry Inc. as saying that back in January 2011, China accounted for just 8 percent of the world's iOS and Android device activations, while the United States led the world with 28 percent.

At present, the United States still has twice as many active smart devices as China does, but China is activating more devices than the United States each month, meaning that the gap is closing between the two countries in terms of installed base.

Increasing prosperity of Chinese consumer market is the main driver behind growth in smartphones and other devices, Bloomberg News said.
