China’s product quality watchdog urged Volkswagen Group China again to effectively resolve problems involving its direct-shift gearboxes (DSG).

Officials at the Law Enforcement Department of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), met with representatives of Volkswagen Group China on the afternoon of Mar. 13. The company said on Mar. 14 that it will actively cooperate with the AQSIQ and other agencies, and submit a detailed plan for fixing related defects.

The company began offering the owners of vehicles using its seven-speed DSG a free software upgrade at authorized dealers on March 9, but has no plans to recall the faulty vehicles.

Affected car owners have been filing complaints with the AQSIQ about abnormal sounds, shakes, and delays in the DSG of Volkswagen vehicles. The agency has notified Volkswagen Group China’s major subsidiaries, including Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Company, FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Company, and Volkswagen (China) Investment Company, of the complaints, and quickly launched an investigation into the reported defects.

In the past two years, there have been a growing number of consumer complaints about flameout and failed upward shifts in Volkswagen’s seven-speed dual-clutch gearboxes.
