On Feb. 9, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved the construction of a nuclear power unit with the third-generation nuclear power technology AP1000 of the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company.

The unit will be established in Vogtle, Georgia. It is the first time that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved the construction of a new nuclear power unit in past 34 years.

After the Fukushima accident, the approval of the AP1000 nuclear power station means that the AP1000 technology has been affirmed as the safest nuclear power technology globally.

In fact, In Sanmen, Zhejiang province, the No. 1 nuclear power unit of the AP1000 "first reactor" has preliminary taken shape and it is expected to generate power and combined to the grid in 2013.

Five years ago, China established its first national nuclear technology company and took the lead in importing the AP1000, and the third-generation nuclear power technology CAP1400 developed independently by China had also completed its preliminary design.
