Mainland markets continue downtrend

(Global Times)

13:56, December 13, 2011

Chinese mainland stock markets extended last week's losses on Monday, amid the accelerating pace of IPOs and continued policies to curb the real estate market.

The Shanghai Composite Index dropped 1.02 percent on Monday, or 23.73 points, to close at 2,291.55; while the Shenzhen Component Index lost 1.10 percent, or 103.99 points, to close at 9,376.28.

Neither of the indices saw their turnover climb back above the 40 billion yuan ($6.29 billion) mark on Monday, with the Shanghai Composite's totaling 36.52 billion yuan, while the Shenzhen Component's was 33.97 billion yuan.

The two indices saw 395 winners, 1,850 losers and 143 drawing even on Monday.

The announcement late last Friday that the government would continue its policies aimed at curbing house prices had a huge impact on real estate stocks on Monday.

Analysts also attributed the big drop to the large number of IPOs due this week.

Seven new stocks are launch ing on the market this week, including New China Life Insurance and Soochow Securities.
