The local government in Changchun, Jilin Province, is urging residents not to drink a certain Coca-Cola product as an investigation into a poisoning incident continues.
The Coca-Cola Company said it has nothing to do with the poisoning case.
The scare came after a boy died and his mother fell into a coma in hospital after drinking the beverage on Monday night, the China News Service reported yesterday.
The initial diagnosis has led officials to suspect organophosphate poisoning was the cause of the tragedy. Police found a highly toxic pesticide in the drinks found at the home of the two victims, said the report.
The Changchun Food Safety Committee released details of the poisoning case yesterday in a television address and told people not to drink Minute Maid Pulpy Super Milky (fresh strawberry flavor). The committee said any residents who have containers of the drink should contact authorities.
Coca-Cola said it has found no proof the poisoning originated with the company and it is working to ensure its products are safe.
