Beijing, Nov.10 (People's Daily Online) --The Chinese government issued on Nov. 8 the country's first certificate for the use of the uninhabited Danmenshan Island at Xiangshan County of Ningbo, Zhejiang province.

This is the first use right certificate granted for the islands since the adoption of the China's Law on Islands in March 2010, and it marks a new beginning of legal, scientific and reasonable development of China's islands.

The Danmenshan Island is located in the southeastern area of the Dongchen Township, Xiangshan County of Ningbo and is near the coastal Damuyang area in central Xiangshan Peninsula. The Island is 1.82 kilometers long and 0.52 kilometers wide and has been developed since 2001 to mainly provide tourists with tree-planting, animal-raising, hunting and fruit-picking services.

The enterprise that gets the certificate will be entitled to develop and use resources on the island for 50 years. It should also assume the responsibility of protecting the island's environment.

Zhejiang is a major island-rich province in China. A survey conducted in 2008 shows that the province has a total of nearly 2,900 islands greater than 500 square meters in size, of which more than 2,600 are uninhabited.

Can those islands support people? Maybe someone, or families could go there if there was some way to provide a living.
