The China Air Transportation Association (CATA) confirmed to the Global Times Tuesday that the association, along with 33 airline companies, is preparing for a lawsuit against the EU's emissions trading scheme (ETS), which has sparked multi-national protests.

"CATA, on behalf of dozens of Chinese air companies, has decided to file a lawsuit against the scheme by the end of this year. At the same time, we demand that Chinese authorities take countermeasures against the EU's actions," Cai Haibo, a vice secretary-general of the association, told the Global Times.

Starting January 1, any flight operating in European airspace will be required to purchase carbon permits to offset emissions, and the amount will be based on overall flight length, not just the time the airplane spends in European airspace. All 33 airlines from China are included in the over-emission list.
