Ban hails approval of UN budget for next two years

21:07, December 28, 2011

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The UN General Assembly on Saturday approved a budget of 5.15 billion U.S. dollars for the period of 2012-2013, a move that was welcomed by UN Secretary- general Ban Ki-moon as a collective achievement and a commitment to "do more and better with less."

"All budget years are tough. But this year was especially difficult," the secretary-general said in his remarks to the General Assembly on Saturday.

"Governments and people everywhere are struggling. It is a time of global financial austerity," he said, commending the 193-member General Assembly for its willingness to make hard choices.

The secretary-general stressed that although the approved budget is lower than the one from the previous biennium, it is imperative to "make the most of our resources" so as to "continue fulfilling every one of the critical global mandates entrusted to the United Nations."

Ban also pledged to continue to ensure that member states' contributions are optimized and that all mandates given to the UN Secretariat are delivered "in full and with efficiency."

The secretary-general initially proposed a budget of 5.197 billion U.S. dollars in October, which represented a 3.2-percent cut in the current financial plan, as part of the efforts to adjust to the current sluggish global economy.
