IMF says "confident" Lagarde would fulfill duties

(Xinhua)

The Washington-based International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Thursday that Christine Lagarde, the newly-appointed IMF Managing Director (MD), would be able to fulfill her duties against the backdrop of an action against her initiated by a French public prosecutor.

"In regard to Ms. Lagarde, the Executive Board prior to its selection of the new managing director discussed the case in France. It would not be appropriate for the board to comment on a case that is currently before the French judiciary," IMF's Executive Board said in a statement Thursday.

"However, the board is confident that she will be able to effectively carry out her duties as managing director," noted the statement.

French Court of Justice of the Republic (CJR) announced Thursday it will open an investigation on the IMF chief for her role in settling the case of French tycoon Bernard Tapie in 2008 when she was French economy and finance minister.
