Libyan NTC fighters take control of Sirte university

08:37, October 10, 2011

TUNIS, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Fighters of Libya's ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) have taken control of a Sirte university, one of the main bastions of toppled leader Muammar Gaddafi's loyalists, Tunisia's official press agency TAP reported Sunday.

"We have taken over the university. We entered from the east and Misrata fighters from the west. Fighting was fierce, with snipers shooting at us, but we have now liberated the area from Gaddafi's watchdogs," said a NTC commander, Nasser Zamoud.

Hundreds of fighters could be found Sunday on the university campus, TAP said.

Located in the southeast of Sirte, the hometown of Gaddafi, the university campus remained a pro-Gaddafi stronghold for weeks due to its strategic position at the main entrance to the southeastern part of the city.

The fighting is ongoing in the city Sunday morning, especially around a conference center close to the university, TAP said.
