At least 6,000 refugees fleeing the violence in neighboring Libya crossed into Tunisia on Wednesday through the Ras El Jedir border point, the official news agency TAP reported on Thursday.
Libyan diplomats as well as African refugees were part of those who found shelter in Tunisia. More refugees are expected to cross into Tunisia in the wake of the escalation of violence in Libya, the report said.
On Wednesday, Tunisia's defense minister, Abdelkrim Zbidi visited Ras El Jedir and reviewed the Emirati hospital located on the border with Libya. The hospital equipped with the cutting edge medical technology and three operating rooms, is ready to host an eventual influx of refugees in view of the deteriorating situation in Libya, TAP said.
