AMMAN, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Jordanian Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit resigned on Monday amid criticism of the government's performance and repeated calls for sacking the cabinet, a senior official told Xinhua.

King Abdullah II of Jordan has accepted Bakhit's resignation and Awn Khaswaneh, a judge of the International Court of Justice, is tipped to head a new government, the official said.

About 70 representatives from political parties in Jordan urged the Jordanian King to sack the government as "the cabinet led by Bakhit failed to fulfill the aspirations of Jordanians and launch genuine reforms," the source said.

Appointed by King Abdullah II on Feb. 1 as prime minister, Bakhit reshuffled his cabinet in July in response to mounting calls for his resignation.

Born in 1947, Bakhit joined the Jordanian Armed Forces in 1964 and retired in 1999 as a major general. He once served as the ambassador to Turkey and Israel, the head of National Security and the acting director of the king's office.

Bakhit served as Jordan's prime minister from 2005 to 2007.
