Yemeni governor survives two ambushes set by opposition militants

09:25, September 08, 2011

SANAA, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- A Yemeni governor survived two successive assassination attempts set by opposition armed men Wednesday in the restive northeast province of Marib, which killed one of his guards, the country's Defense Ministry said.

"Ali al-Zaidi, the governor of Marib, survived twin ambushes set by militants of the opposition Islamic Islah Party in Badbadbah district in Marib, in which one of his bodyguards was killed and four others were wounded in the second ambush," the ministry said in a statement on its website.

"The ambushes were set while Governor Zaidi was touring the district," it said, adding that security forces were tracing those outlaws to bring them to justice.

The impoverished Arab country has been gripped by a political crisis since late January when protests against President Ali Abdullah Saleh erupted.
