BAGHDAD, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Four gunmen and two Iraqi security members were killed during a raid on a suspected insurgent safe house in Baghdad, military and police sources said Thursday.

Based on credible intelligence reports, a special force of the Iraqi army backed by helicopters raided the safe house in Baghdad' s western district of Yarmouk and traded fire with gunmen wearing explosive vests, killing four of them, Qassim Atta, spokesman of Baghdad operations command, told reporters.

Two security members were killed and two others wounded during the clash, Atta said.

The raid came three days after deadly attacks in several Iraqi provinces that left nearly 70 people killed and more than 260 wounded in the latest wave of violence in the country.

In a separate incident Thursday morning, two people were wounded when a roadside bomb ripped through Baghdad's southwestern district of Bayaa, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

In addition, a traffic policeman and a civilian were wounded in a shootout incident by gunmen in the Taji area, some 20 km north of Baghdad, the source said.

Violence and sporadic high profile attacks are still common in the Iraqi cities despite the dramatic decrease of violence over the past few years.
