Abbas calls for Arab political, fiscal support of UN vote

RAMALLAH, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Palestinians need Arabic political and financial support to succeed in approaching the United Nations to gain an international recognition of a Palestinian state next month, President Mahmoud Abbas said Monday.

The lack of Arab support now "will lessen chances of success" in getting the recognition, especially as the United States and Israel oppose this step and threaten financial measures to press the Palestinian leadership to back off, Abbas made the remarks in an article published by several Arab newspapers.

He stressed that the pressure will not prevent the Palestinians from asking the General Assembly to recognize Palestine as an independent state. Earlier, Abbas said that the Palestinians will submit their request on September 20.

Palestinians' demand is to get the recognition of their state on the lands that Israel has occupied in 1967, with East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital.

Abbas reiterated that going to the UN came after peace talks with Israel reached a deadlock and that sponsors of the peace process "have become unable to persuade Israel to meet its obligations," especially after Israel announced new settlement constructions in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
