Vasile Blaga elected Romanian senate president

10:52, November 29, 2011

BUCHAREST, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Vasile Blaga, former interior minister and senator of the ruling Democratic Liberal Party, was elected president of Romania's Senate on Monday.

Blaga won 69 of the 132 electoral votes cast, defeating Titus Corlatean, the candidate of the opposition Social Democratic Party and Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Senate.

The elections were held after former Senate president Mircea Geoana was dismissed from his Social Democratic Party over the allegation that he was attempting to destabilize the opposition coalition.
