09:49, August 25, 2011

MOSCOW, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Russia has established diplomatic relations with the Republic of South Sudan, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

Russia and the new state in Africa signed an agreement on establishing diplomatic relations in South Sudan's capital of Juba on August 22, the FM website said.

The two countries agreed to base their relations on the ground of the mutual respect of their independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-involvement in the domestic affairs, peaceful settlement of disputes and other international laws declared, in particular, the U.N. Charter, said the ministry.

"Moscow confirms the desire to develop friendly relations and cooperation with this new state in favor of the peoples of the two countries as well as of security in Africa and the world as a whole," it said.

The Republic of South Sudan voted to secede from the north in a referendum in January and declared independence on July 9.
