Russian ammunition testing range explosion kills six

09:49, August 24, 2011

MOSCOW, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Six servicemen died and 12 were injured on Tuesday in the explosion at a weapon testing range in Russia's Astrakhan region, a regional police source told Itar-Tass news agency.

Several of the injured were in serious condition, the source said.

The explosion happened during the disposal of ammunition at the Ashuluk firing range, according to a spokesman of the Russian Defense Ministry.

Preliminary reports said the explosion might be caused by violation of safety rules. However, the explosion did not trigger a fire. It also posed no danger to local residents.

Members of the Russian Investigative Committee have already flown to the scene, committee spokesman Vladimir Markin told Interfax news agency.

Since June this year, a series of explosion at ammunition depots in several Russian regions have killed at least eight people. In November 2009, ten servicemen were killed in two incidents in an arms depot in the city of Ulyanovsk in central Russia.
