Italian PM asks Gaddafi to stop resistance

10:10, August 23, 2011

ROME, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Monday urged Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to stop all "unnecessary resistance" at once.

In a statement issued by the Italian government, Berlusconi asked Gaddafi to stop all unnecessary resistance to save his people from further suffering.

The Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) and all the Libyan fighters involved in Tripoli are crowning their aspiration to a new democratic and unified Libya, said the statement, adding that the Italian government is on the side of the NTC.

Berlusconi also called on the NTC to refrain from vengeance, and to courageously face the transition to democracy in the spirit of openness to all components of the population.

Libyan rebels were reportedly moving into the center of Tripoli in their latest military gain early on Monday, while Gaddafi's whereabouts remain a mystery.
