Britain says "end is near for Gaddafi", urges Gaddafi to step down

08:44, August 22, 2011

LONDON, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- The British government called on Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to step down on Sunday, while it was reported that Libyan rebels had controlled Tripoli, the capital of Libya.

"It is clear from the scenes we are witnessing in Tripoli that the end is near for Gaddafi," said a statement issued by the British government.

Gaddafi "must go now to avoid any further suffering for his own people," it added.

Libyan rebels have told Sky News that Saif Al-Islam, Qadhafi's son, has been captured and rebels made rapid advances into center of Tripoli meeting no resistance from Qaddafi's troops along the way.

According to latest reports, Libyan rebel forces had controlled Tripoli and are clearing up the remnants of Gaddafi's forces, said senior National Transitional Council official Abdullah Almayhop.

Earlier reports by Al-Jazeera TV channel said opposition convoy entered the western district of Tripoli on Sunday with almost no sign of resistance.

Residents of the city began to stream into streets to welcome the opposition troops, despite Gaddafi's call to urge people to take up arms to guard his rule.
