Former Libyan number two lands in Italy with family

08:42, August 22, 2011

ROME, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Former Libyan number two Abdesslem Jalloud, after leaving the Gaddafi regime, has arrived in Italy together with his family, local media reported on Sunday.

Jalloud, one of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's closest aides and former finance minister in the 1970's, on Friday switched over to the side of the rebel-led Transitional National Council (TNC) before entering Tunisia and leaving Tunisian island of Djerba for Rome by air.

According to local newspaper Corriere della Sera, it is not yet certain if Jalloud and his family will be remaining in Rome or going to other destinations.

Jalloud took part in the revolution of 1969 which brought Gaddafi to power and had ever since been one of his most important officials up to the 1990's.

The Tripoli government has downplayed his defection, saying Jalloud did not play a central role in the regime structure.
