BERLIN, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- The unbridled arson attack at expensive cars on the streets surged up with lunacy for the 3rd consecutive night, as vehicles in Brandenburg were also set on aflame, local media reported on Thursday.

Despite the police have stepped up plain clothed and helicopter supervision over the areas, 9 vehicles were still set on fire in the early morning hours of Thursday.

The arson onslaught on cars occurred mainly in the districts of Charlottenburg, Tiergarten and Neu-Hohenschonhausen, having brought the total number of automobiles burned down to 35 over the past 3 nights in the western districts of the German capital.

There are no reports of casualty or injury so far.

The fire assailant extended Wednesday night their target to the surrounding state of Brandenburg, where two vehicles were torched in the county of Teltow-Flaming.

Dieter Wiefelsputz, the interior policy expert for the centre-left Social Democrats, described the arson as "a prelude to terrorism." on the Bild newspaper paper on Thursday.

"We need hard sentencing acting as a deterrent," said Rainer Wendt, the head of DPolG police union, during an interview with the paper.

Authorities have posted a reward of 5,000 euro for clues to the arrest of the car arsonists.
