Russia's new stealth fighter to enter service as early as 2014

MOSCOW, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Russia's Sukhoi T-50 stealth fighter, which made its debut at the Moscow International Air Show (MAKS) Tuesday, will enter service in 2014-2015, according to Russia's air force chief.

The T-50, which has been co-developed with India, made its first public appearance at MAKS at the Zhukovsky airfield outside Moscow.

Russian Air Force Commander Alexander Zelin told reporters at the air show opening that trial samples of the fifth-generation fighter jet will be supplied to the air force in 2013.

"Mass produced aircraft will not arrive until 2014-2015," he said.

Meanwhile, Mikhail Pogosyan, head of Russia's state-owned United Aircraft Corp, said the new fighter would become the main combat aircraft for both the Russian and Indian air forces.

The T-50, a rival to the U.S. F-22 Raptor, made its maiden flight in Russia's Far East region last year.
