Ukrainian ruling party seeks "social consolidation" via merger

KIEV, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine's ruling party Tuesday announced its merger with the Strong Ukraine party in a bid to" consolidate Ukrainian society and help implement reforms."

Party of Regions leader and Prime Minister Mykola Azarov told a news conference that the ruling party was ready to unite with all political forces interested in carrying out reforms in Ukraine.

Strong Ukraine leader Sergiy Tigipko, who joined Azarov to announce the merger, said the country's political sphere needs consolidation and the merger would benefit the nation.

Tigipko was expected to play "a leadership role" in the new party, according to local press reports.
