15:03, August 08, 2011

Two French soldiers were killed in an attack in Afghanistan, bringing the total French fatalities in the country to 72 since 2001, The Elysee Palace, the French president's office said on Sunday.

Two soldiers were killed and five others were injured by "insurgent attacks" during a search of a fortified position in the Afghan Tagab Valley, it said in a statement.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy reaffirmed his support to Afghan authorities and people, saying France is determined to work with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) to restore stability in the country, the statement added.

Last month, France announced a withdrawal of about 4,000 French soldiers deployed in Afghan territories by 2014. One quarter of the French troops were scheduled to leave Afghanistan before the end of 2012.
