One policeman killed, three others wounded in blast in southeastern Turkey

One policeman was killed and three others wounded in a mine blast in southeastern Turkey on Sunday, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.

The mine, probably planted by the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK), exploded while a police vehicle was passing by near Cukurca High School in Cukurca town of Hakkari province, killing one policeman and wounding three others, according to the report.

The injured were taken to a hospital in Hakkari city by helicopter for medical treatment, the report said.

Listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, the banned PKK took up arms in 1984 to create an ethnic homeland in southeastern Turkey.

Some 40,000 people have been killed in conflicts involving the PKK for the past over two decades.
