Italian coast guards on Monday found 25 dead bodies of refugees on a boat, which carried 268 people upon arrival at the country's southernmost island of Lampedusa, the local ANSA news agency reported.

The causes of their deaths and their nationalities remain unclear, according to the report.

Since the unrests in the Middle East broke out early this year, Lampedusa has become one of the transit points for thousands of refugees fleeing the volatile region.

According to official figures provided by Italian authorities, since January, about 30,000 immigrants and refugees, most of whom came from Tunisia, Libya and sub-Saharan Africa, have landed on Lampedusa.
