Clinton says UN statement on Syria "positive step"

08:45, March 22, 2012

WASHINGTON, March 21 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday that the UN statement on Syria is a "positive step," and urged all Syrians to immediately implement the UN plan.

"This is a positive step. The Council has now spoken with one voice," she told reporters after meeting with Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul at the State Department.

Clinton's remarks came after the UN Security Council earlier the day voiced "full support" for the peace efforts in Syria of Kofi Annan, the UN and Arab League joint special envoy.

She urged all Syrians to "call for and work for the immediate implementation of the Annan plan," warning that if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fails to do so, he and his regime would face increasing pressure and isolation.

"We are coordinating with the United Nations on the delivery of humanitarian aid," Clinton noted, adding that the United States is helping the Syrian opposition to participate in the "Syrian-led transition process."

The Security Council adopted the presidential statement in support of the Feb. 23 appointment of Annan as the United Nations and the Arab League joint envoy for Syria.

The council said it fully supports Annan's efforts "to bring an immediate end to all violence and human rights violations, secure humanitarian access, and facilitate a Syrian-led political transition" in Syria.

Li Baodong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, told Xinhua on Wednesday that the statement adopted by the Security Council expressed the united voice of the Council and made a positive step toward political settlement of the Syrian problem.
