WASHINGTON, March 20 (Xinhua) -- The United States on Tuesday condemned the deadly bomb attacks in Iraq which have killed at least 45 people and raised questions about the security situation in the country ahead of the upcoming Arab summit.

"We strongly condemn the attacks on innocent civilians in Iraq, a blatant attempt by extremists to undermine Iraq's progress toward a more secure, stable and prosperous future," said White House spokesman Jay Carney at a briefing.

Carney offered condolences to the victims of the attacks and expressed support to Iraq's efforts to bring those responsible to justice.

He noted that the attacks are "clearly aimed at trying to get attention" in the run-up of the Arab League summit scheduled to be held in Baghdad on March 29.

However, despite the recent spate of attacks, Carney insisted that the violence levels in Iraq remained at "near-historic lows" and Iraqi forces have proven themselves capable of maintaining security in the war-torn country.

A string of bomb attacks and gunfire killed 45 people and wounded some 212 in seven Iraqi provinces on Tuesday, just a few days ahead of the Arab League (AL) summit scheduled to be held in Baghdad late in the month.

The attacks also came on the ninth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq that toppled former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. Iraq sees the Arab League summit as a significant milestone in its history that would lead the country to play a powerful and positive role in the Arab world.
