Peru, Brazil sign military cooperation agreement

21:12, December 23, 2011

LIMA, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Peru and Brazil on Thursday signed here a military cooperation agreement to enhance performance of the Armed Forces on the common border and in other national security strategic areas, official sources said.

Under the deal signed by Peru's Defense Minister Luis Otarola and his Brazilian counterpart Celso Amorim, Brazil will offer Peru training, technical support and logistics in the security and defense field to deepen the friendship between the two countries.

The two ministers said Peru and Brazil have a strategic bilateral and regional relationship based on the Defense Framework Agreement signed in 2004 due to the joint interests of a broad border and the care for the Amazonian area.

They said cooperation also includes actions to prevent any eventual external threats against South American natural resources and the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking.

According to the sources, the two countries will also develop commercial alliance between state-owned companies and defense industry, research and development organizations.
