U.S. opposes legalization of West Bank settlements

09:12, October 13, 2011

WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- U.S. State Department said on Wednesday that Washington opposes the legalization of the Jewish settlements in West Bank.

"The United States has a clear policy - we do not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlement activity," State Department said in a statement.

"We oppose any effort to legalize settlement outposts, which is unhelpful to our peace efforts and would contradict Israeli commitments and obligations," the statement noted.

The statement called on both parties to take "constructive actions" and avoid steps that will complicate the Middle East process.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that his government will seek to legalize settlement outposts on private Palestinian land.
