6.8-magnitude quake hits northern Peru

LIMA, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale jolted northern Peru at 17:46:11 GMT Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The epicenter of the quake was 560 km northeast of the capital Lima, 82.07 km north of Pucallpa, in the Peruvian Amazon forest close to the Brazilian border, USGS said.

According to the preliminary report, the earthquake measuring 6. 9, was 145.2 km deep.

There are no immediate reports of any casualties or damages in the powerful earthquake.
