Vacationing Obama consults top execs on job creation

WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama, who is on a summer vacation, is seeking wisdom from his jobs council to improve the country's employment situation, said the White House on Wednesday.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said that Obama discussed with General Electric CEO and chairman Jeffrey Immelt, also the chairman of the Council on Jobs and Competitiveness created by Obama last year.

The president also talked with American Express CEO and chairman Kenneth Chenault focusing on increasing engineering graduates and adding construction jobs by making buildings more energy efficient.

Earnest said the Council on Jobs and Competitiveness will hold meetings Aug. 31 in Portland, Oregon, to discuss efforts to add engineers to the workforce.

Obama is expected to announce new proposals to boost economy and create jobs after his 10-day vacation ending Saturday.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, U.S. unemployment rate, currently at 9.1 percent, is expected to fall to 8.5 in the fourth quarter next year.
