WASHINGTON, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. State Department said on Sunday that the offensive against Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in Tripoli, the capital of Libya, was "clearly underway."

"We continue efforts to encourage the TNC to maintain broad outreach across all segments of Libyan society and to plan for post-Gaddafi Libya," State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said in a statement.

"Gaddafi's days are numbered. If Gaddafi cared about the welfare of the Libyan people, he would step down now," she said added.

Opposition convoy entered the western district of Tripoli on Sunday with almost no sign of resistance, Al-Jazeera TV channel reported.
