Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Belize on alert for tropical storm

17:10, August 19, 2011

MANAGUA, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. National Hurricane Center issued an alert Thursday for Honduras, Nicaragua, Belize and Mexico's eastern Yucatan peninsula as a tropical wave in the central Caribbean may develop into a storm in the next 48 hours.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, reported that the tropical wave is located about 200 miles (322 km) northeast of Cabo Gracias a Dios in Nicaragua and is gathering strength.

A plane of the U.S. Air Force Reserve sent to investigate the area had to return because of mechanical problems, it said.

Forecasters said there is at least a 60 percent chance of the wave developing into a tropical storm in the next two days.

The center is also watching a new tropical wave about 850 miles (1,368 km) west of the Cape Verde Islands, but the wave only has a slight chance of developing into a storm.
