Obama to urge Syrian president to leave power: U.S. media

WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday will call on Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down and will order new sanctions against Syria, U.S. media said.

An unnamed official was quoted as saying that the White House will issue shortly a "very tough" new executive order sanctioning Syria, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will make a formal announcement at a news conference.
