RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Brazil registered the sale of 3.86 million computers in the second quarter of 2011, according to the Brazil Quarterly PC Tracker study, released on Tuesday by consulting company IDC Brazil.

The figure is record-high and represents a 12.5 percent increase from the same period last year. Brazil surpassed Japan by 95,000 computers and became the world's third largest market for computers, after China and the United States.

According to IDC Brazil, 51.5 percent of the computers sold in Brazil from April to June were laptops, while 48.5 percent were desktop computers. Most of the computers were destined to domestic users, which reflects the popularization of computers taking place in the country in the past few years.

"Never before so many computers were sold in a single quarter in Brazil," said IDC Brazil's market analyst Martim Juacida.

Juacida attributed the positive figures to the lower prices practiced in the sector, an effect of the low dollar. According to him, Brazil's good economic performance and the higher access to credit also made computers more accessible to Brazilians.

"Producers have managed to maintain falling prices, generating a strong demand," he said.

Juacida pointed that the sales of laptop computers have been especially positive, increasing 10.5 percent from the first quarter and 27 percent from the same period in 2010.
